Georgia off the beaten track: an incredible diversity

I always tell my guests that it’s impossible to get a true feeling for the diversity of Georgia on a short trip. I’ve been here for more than seven years and I still find that I have so much to explore. Rather than racing back and forth across the country trying to photograph everything written on some top-10 list, I usually recommend that visitors choose a couple regions to focus on and travel there in depth. You’ll get a more rewarding (and less exhausting) sense of place and belonging, and the other regions won’t go anywhere – once you start getting into the heart of Georgia, you’ll find yourself coming back again and again, wanting to explore whatever’s around the next corner. I speak from experience…

For such a small country, Georgia’s regions are incredibly diverse. Wherever you go, you’ll find different climates, topographies, culture, and cuisine, making any journey around the country a rich set of possibilities. I’ve been just about everywhere (although a few remote valleys remain to dream on) – so, in case these possibilities might seem overwhelming, I’ve made a little page describing each region, including some pictures, so you can get a bit of an idea about what all these different places are like. Happy exploring! Click through my region in the drop-down section of the top menu, or use the links below. All the pictures on the website I’ve taken myself in my travels around Georgia off the beaten track, except for a few stills from some films I directed where someone else was the videographer.

Please note that two regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and the so-called South Ossetia, are currently under Russian military occupation. While it is safe to travel everywhere else in Georgia, I do not offer tours to either of the occupied territories.
